Members of "Buffalo Bill's Congress of Rough Riders of the World" pose on horseback in a camp for Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. One man sits on his horse in front of the rest of the group in the center foreground. The men all wear uniforms and hats and have scarves tied around their necks. A man in the right center of the group holds a flagpole with a flag with the word "Roosevelt's" on it, indicating that the group represents the First Regiment of the United States Cavalry universally known as the "Roosevelt's Rough Riders." The troupe reenacted the Battle of San Juan Hill during its performance in the Wild West Show. The First Regiment fought under the leadership of then-Lieutenant Colonel Theodore Roosevelt in the Spanish-American War in 1898. In battle in Cuba they were not able to use their horses, however, and fought on foot. Roosevelt went on to become president of the United States. A covered wagon is in the right background.
