Colorado's
first
great
mining
town
,
Central
City
,
50
miles
west
of
Denver
. This
little
town
is
called
the "
Cradle
of
Colorado
"
because
it
was the
output
of its
gold
mines
that
sustained
the
territory
during
the
first
decade
of its
existence
, and from this
little
town
came
Colorado's
first
two
U.S
.
Senators
and the
first
Congressional
representative
. The
square
building
in the
center
of the
picture
is
the
old
Teller
House
,
named
after
and
built
by
Henry
M
.
Teller
,
who
represented
Colorado
in the
U.S
.
Senate
for
30
years
and
who
served
as
secretary
[sic.]
of the
Interior
under
President
Arthur
.
President
Grant
stopped
at this
house
on his
trip
to
Colorado
in the
early
70's
. In
honor
of his
visit
, the
miners
paved
the
sidewalk
,
leading
from the
door
of the
Teller
House
to the
street
, with
silver
bricks
,
over
which
the
President
walked
with a
great
deal
of
hesitation
and
protestation
. At that
time
the
street
was a
sea
of
mud
and the
President
did
not
want
to
step
upon
the
bricks
because
he would
gey
them
dirty.
