Summary	Church was destroyed in the "great earthquake" of April, 1906.; is, the better. No man can work well unless he can speak as the Great Master did of the joy set before Him. Memorial ; Memorial Church was completed at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, in 1903 and was dedicated by Jane Stanford to the memory of her late husband, Leland Stanford. The Stanfords founded the university in 1885. A large mosaic of a scene with Jesus Christ decorates the wall above the doors in the interior of Memorial Church. An inscription below the mosaic reads "A noble ambition is among the most helpful influences of student life, and the higher the ambition
