Memorial Church was completed at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, in 1903 and was dedicated by Jane Stanford to the memory of her late husband, Leland Stanford. The Stanfords founded the university in 1885. The tops of carved wooden pews are in the left foreground in this view of the interior of the church. An inscription carved into the base of a large stone column in the center, midground, reads "In loving memory of Josiah Stanford, father of Leland ; Stanford Born Feb. 28, 1775 Died April 19, 1862." An inscription at the base of a square platform which supports an elaborately carved podium reads "Lord Jesus, without reserve, without exception, without limitation, may Thy holy will be done in all things, at all times." A winged cherub decorates a font in the left background. Memorial Church was destroyed in the "great earthquake" of April, 1906.
