A group of miners stands in a cage inside a mine, possibly the Saratoga Mine in Russell Gulch near Central City in Gilpin County, Colorado, probably in the 1880s or 1890s. Cages such as this replaced bucket hoists by the 1880s in many mines, and hemp cables had been replaced by steel cables.
