Mines and piles of mine tailings dot the hillsides surrounding Gregory Gulch in Gilpin County, Colorado. The gulch is named after John H. Gregory, who first discovered gold in Colorado in 1859. A dirt road intersects two wider dirt roads that run parallel from the foreground into the background at the base of a hill. Several houses stand along the dirt roads. A large stone building that is missing its roof stands in the midground.
