Deric Nusbaum, Jesse's stepson, stands underneath the huge rock overhang at the site of Step House, a cliff dwelling at Mesa Verde National Park. He holds his left arm straight up to touch the rock overhang. The site has not been excavated. A man works slightly away from where Deric stands. A coat lies on the ground between them. Shovels lean against the dirt ledge near the man. Small slabs of sandstone are scattered around the site.
