View down main street of Amity, Prowers County, southeastern Colorado, shows a wide muddy street lined with one-story false fronts and and a few horse-drawn carriages and wagons. Some of the businesses have canopy roofs over their entries. James Child's stone grocery and dry goods store shows on further corner. Telephone poles are on the right side of the street. Amity was an old trading post and stage station along the Santa Fe trail, and later became a Salvation Army colony (1898) to relieve urban poverty brought about by rapid industrialization.
