Denver's First Regiment Band poses outside the archway of Leadville, Colorado's Ice Palace, which was built for the 1896 Winter Crystal Carnival on a site known as Capitol Hill. During the formal opening ceremonies, January 8, 1896, the band marched in the parade and also played concerts in the east ballroom in which they performed Sousa's "Directoria Imortellen Waltz." The members wear uniforms which include pants with stripes on the sides, jackets and flat top hats. A young boy stands in the center of the group in a uniform with balloon pants and a short jacket, ice skates strapped to boots, and a baton in his hand. Instruments include tubas, trombones, cornets, clarinets, snare drum, and bass drum with "First Infantry Band, Denver" around the crest with mountains and pick axes.
