Ornate
ceiling
of what was
once
the
music
room
is
one
of
few
luxurious
reminders
of
architectural
grandeur
of
Campion
mansion
. The
Italian
Renaissance-style
structure
, with its
birdseye
maple
paneling
and
mahogany
cupboards
,
once
was
furnished
in
elegant
Louis
XVI
and
Florentine
design
.
Now
the
floors
of the
mansions
30
rooms
are
covered
with
broken
glass
,
fallen
plaster
,
empty
cardboard
boxes
and
dead
birds
.
After
John
Campion
died
in
1916
, his
survivors
were
beset
with a
series
of
tragedies
.
First
John
Jr.'s
bride
died
.
Three
years
later
,
Roland
,
youngest
of the
Campion
children
,
died
of a
heart
condition
.
Mrs
.
Campion
died
in
1922
. A
year
later
,
John
Jr
. was
killed
in an
auto
accident
. In
1924
,
Dr
.
J
.
F
.
Nagel
,
fiance
of
Helen
Margaret
Campion
, also was
killed
in a
car
accident
. He had been on his
way
to
Denver
for the
wedding
. The
Campion
mansion
was
labeled
the '
house
of
heartbreak.
'
Helen
Campion
sold
the
house
in
1940
to
Clarence
Daly
,
who
turned
it
over
to the
Boettcher
Foundation
,
which
in
turn
presented
it
to the
American
Red
Cross
as a
gift
. The
mansion
served
as
Denver
headquarters
for the
Red
Cross
until
February
1962
when
the
organization
moved
to a
new
site
.
Two
investors
bought
the
building
and
grounds
, and
Lawrence
C
.
Phipps
III
took
it
over
on a
99
year
lease
.
Phipps
plans
a
15
story
apartment
building
on the
site.
