View of General George Crook's headquarters on Whitewood Creek, in the southern Black Hills, Dakota Territory, during the Native American Sioux campaigns, shows Crook in plain dress sitting on a tree root with his bearded headquarters staff and enlisted orderlies in worn clothing. The headquarters flag or guidon has a five-pointed star sewn on it. Major Thaddeus H. Stanton, the "Fighting Paymaster" holds a Springfield rifle to the left of the flag; other soldiers may include Captain George M. Randall, Twenty-third Infantry, Chief of Scouts; and Captain John W. Bubb, Fourth Infantry, Chief of Commissary.
