Standing outdoor portrait of Chief Red Cloud, (Makhpia-sha, or Maqpeya-luta) Native American Sioux (Lakota or Teton group, Oglala band) and his wife. Red Cloud led his people in the Fetterman fight and was a great negotiator and diplomat. He wears a shirt with fringe, a blanket and a feather in his hair; his wife wears a fringed dress and a blanket around her waist.

Condition: Print shows crease and deterioration of original.; Formerly F12090.; Title and "after the Fetterman disaster when he led 3000 Sioux in wiping out Lt.-Col. J. W. Fetterman's force of 81 men. Fetterman had bragged: "Give me 80 men fresh from the Civil War, and I will ride up and down thru the whole Sioux nation." He got his 80 men, but they didn't last 30 minutes in this fight, second only to Custer debacle ten years later, brought on the same way; both Fetterman and Custer violated orders, to attack the Indians." typed on label on back of print.; R7100315595
