Exterior view of the Maxwell House, Georgetown, Colorado, at 409 Fourth (4th) Street. Construction began in 1870; house was acquired by B.F. Potter in 1891, who added the tower and decorative elements to the facade. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Maxwell purchased the house in 1895; the house was later owned by Professor and Mrs. Frost. The Victorian style of the building is eclectic, and includes a French mansard roof on the left of the facade, Italianate windows, Greek Revival pediments, and Queen Anne patterned shingles on the tower over the porch and entrance on the right. Pedimented dormers and windows and a bay window are on the right side of the house. A wood and metal fence runs in front of the house, with a leafless tree in the yard; a rough stone wall and grasses lead up to the fence. Leavenworth Mountain is visible behind the house.

Notes
Formerly MO154.; Hand-written in pencil on back of photoprint: The Frank Maxwell House. Built on a three-fifth scale, this striking example of American Victorian architecture, is not the summer home of a professor from the Colorado School of Mines. It has been faithfully (and painstakingly) repainted in its orginal colors, a soft rosy "Georgetown pink" and maroon and brown stripings. Professor Frost and his wife occupy the town's most frequently photographed and painted structure. Almost every sunny summer day an artist can be seen, working at an easel on the vacant lot directly across the street. A sign briefly describing the house protects the Frosts from an unduly large number of insistent question askers. In ink: Frank Maxwell Home, Georgetown, Colorado, 1951, Elmer Moss, photograph.; Photoprint has tape adhesive on back.; Title supplied by cataloger.; R7100012943
