: "In
1854
,
colonists
from
New
Mexico
founded
the
town
of
Guadalupe
located
on the
north
side
of the
Conejos
River
in
southern
Colorado
. They
met
in a
small
jacal
(log
hut)
to
sing
hymns
. They
moved
the
settlement
across
the
river
to
higher
ground
on the
south
side
and
founded
the
town
of
Conejos
. In
1856
,
Rev
.
Gabriel
Ussel
offered
the
first
mass
in the
still
incomplete
building
.
Completed
in
1860
, the
adobe
church
was
completed
and a
rectory
built
.
Pedro
Antonio
Lobato
aided
Juan
Francisco
Lujan
in the
casting
of the
bell
for the
Church
, and in
1863
,
Bishop
John
Baptiste
Lamy
blessed
both
the
church
and
rectory.
