Summary	Studio portrait of Hispanic American Major Rafael Chacón and his wife Juanita Páiz de Chacón. Major Chacón served in the U.S. Army in New Mexico during the Civil War. He wears a uniform and has a mustache, his wife wears a long dress with a full skirt, decorated with cut velvet and lace. Her hair is parted in the middle and worn back in braids. After his retirement from the military, Major Chacón moved to Trinidad, Colorado, where he served as Las Animas County Treasurer and Sheriff.

Notes	Content derived from inventory prepared by Dana EchoHawk.; From inventory: "After serving in the First Regiment of New Mexico Volunteers and being wrongfully accused for events during Civil War battles in New Mexico, Major Rafael Chacón moved his family to Trinidad in 1866. In Trinidad he became a Deputy County Clerk, Las Animas County Treasurer, County Sheriff and school board member. In 1875 he edited a Spanish language newspaper in Trinidad. Rafael Chacón was compadres to Senator Casimiro Barela, and his son Eusebio married into the Barela family.
