Summary	View of the West Portal of the Alpine Tunnel in Gunnison County, Colo. Located above timberline near the town of Pitkin, the narrow gauge railroad tunnel was constructed in 1882 underneath the Continental Divide in order to connect to the town of St. Elmo. The east and west entrances collapsed after the tunnel's closure was ordered by the Colorado & Southern Railroad (a corporate descendant of the Denver, South Park & Pacific) in 1910.
