Part I—New England—(8B Characters}
Boy—(Reading aloud from 3oc Sci. book) 0.84
The First Settlers in New England—"It was a bitter morning
in Dec, near Cape Cod. Miles Standish had just landed and led
a little group off into the deep woods to explore the land. They
had spent many such cold days searching the shores of Cape Cod
for a good place at Which to locate their settlement. On board
the Mayflower, people were growing impatient, and discouraged.
The trip had been very long, very hard, and many were sick (Boy--
Hi story is so dry, I wi sh the people could come to life and talk
to me.)
Curtain is pulled
Pilgrim Boy—Hello there- I am a pilgrim who came to America and
settled on that wild New England shore *
Boy--I!ll bet it was hard to make a landing.
P.Boy--"Yes--It was — The breaking waves dashed high,
On a stern and rock bound coast,
And the woods against the stormy sky,
Their giant branches tossed
And the heavy "night hung dark
The hills and water ofer,
When a band of exiles moored their bark'
On the wild New an gland shore.
Not as the conqueror comes,
They, the true—hearted, came;
Not with the roll of the stirring drums,
And the trumpet that sings of fame;
Not as the flying comes,
In silence and in fear;
They shook the depths of the desert gloom.
With their hymns of lofty cheer.
. :. Amidst the storm they sang,
And the stars heard and the aea;
And the sounding aisles of the dim woods rang
To the anthem of the free.'
The oc ean eagle soared
From his nest by the k.hite wave's foam;
And the rocking pines of the forest roared-
This was their welcome home J
There were men with hoary hair
amidst the pilgrim band;
Why had they come to wither there,
Away from their childhood's land?
