Gentlemen:
We, the members of the West Side Action Council, Inc. (as evidenced by
signature sheets attached), hereby wish to go on record ascpposing the Auraria
Higher Educational Complex bill because of uncertainties such as the following:
1. Plans for relocating residents have now been changed to extend
over a period of up to five (5) years which we feel will be
detrimental to the present residents who can lose all of their
right to the required reimbursement for moving expenses and
relocation payments.
2. The entire context of the project as originally presented to and
passed upon by the voters has been changed and demonstrates the
constant inhumane treatment of the poor and disadvantaged residents
of the West Side and, more specifically, those in Census Tract 12.
This Council has a moral obligation to the residents of the West Side
community, and most specifically those of Census Tract 12, to speak out in
opposition. We ask you, therefore, to examine the following facts:
1. Will the "promised housing" for Auraria residents be a reality
or just fiction -- where will 900 displaced residents live, since
housing to fit low-income needs is non-existent?
2. Will "open-door enrollment" exist within the Auraria Higher Education
Complex as publicly advocated?
We trust that, after thorough and careful examination of the above facts
and in consideration of the affected residents, you will vote to DEFEAT passage
of this bill!
