This Is Action!
Do you sometimes wonder what the word " action' * in Park Hill
Action Committee means? Do we really do enough to warrant
all the noise and excitement? Following is a list of some of die
things that the PHAC has been doing in the past few months. Take
a look and judge for yourself whether or not we deserve the name
' * Action Committee*'.
The Clean-Up Fix-Up Committee has been working on the Lights
On, Crime Out Campaign. In connection with this the General
Chairman of the PHAC, Richard E. Young, appeared on the Wayward Barker radio program on January 14. From the looks of
Park Hill at night it seems that the campaign has certainly caught
o n as many of the blocks are brightly lit from dusk to dawn.
Regular monthly meetings have kept the Human Relations Committee busy. These meetings are always well attended and always
interesting and exciting. If you want to meet some of the most
interesting and intelligent people in Park Hill this is the place
to come. At the present time the Committee is planning another
Human Relations Workship to be held in March.
The Membership Committee Chairman, Joe Meyer, has recently
been appointed to the board of the Mayor's Commission on Community Relations.
The Zoning Committee and its Chairman, Gerald Kopel, have
been most active getting the ball rolling on the re-zoning that they
are undertaking. Mr. Kopel has been collecting both names of
people interested in taking petitions around and donations to defray the $500 that the re-zoning will cost. (See coupon elsewhere
on this page.) On January 22 a meeting was held at Park Hill
Congregational Church to discuss this project with the people
of Park Hill. Theblockworkers
will soon be around to your home
with the petitions--look for theml
Getting delegates from sponsoring churches is another activity currently taking place.
The Publicity Committee each
month edits the Actionews Page.
They also make posters for the
meetings of outer committees. At
the present time they are winding
up the publicity for the Town
Meeting.
The Schools Committee went
to the School Board in November
with further recommendations
for the expansion program at
Smiley. In addition to the girls
gym, they asked that excavation
under the new gym be done at
this time for further shop rooms.
When money would be available
to finish these rooms, the shops
could then be moved from die
entrance area of Smiley and this
space converted to other needed
uses.
The Schools Committee is now
gathering membership data on
schools in this area and considering whether to again ask the
School Board for a return of the
Ashley district to Smiley which
is within walking distance of most
of the pupils in this particular
district. These pupils are now
being bussed to Gove. If this
return were effected, it would
be a saving to the taxpayers because it would release two buses
to be used where distances make
bussing a necessity.
Chicago Ideas
Used By PHAC
The conference on Religion
and Race held in Chicago a month
ago was of more than passing interest to the members of the
Park Hill Action Committee.
They were all very interested
because, almost every suggestion
that came out of" the Conrerence
was one that the Park Hill Action Committee has been acting
upon for over three years!
One of the things suggested by
the Conference was to educate
people in order to wipe out the
"fears and superstitions which
are the basis of racial injustice." This has been one of the
major goals of die PHAC since
the beginning. Along this line,
many of us in the PHAC have
spoken before dozens of groups
all over the city and suburbs.
We have speakers and discussion panels available free to any
group that is interested. They
may be obtained by simply calling Mrs. Doris Shultz at FR 7-
1461.
One complaint expressed at
the Chicago Conference is that
many areas would like to do
something about the racial issue but do not have enough Negro
participation -- this is one problem that the PHAC does not have
as we have many hard working,
intelligent and sincere Negroes
working with us.

neighborhood, and to welcome
them as neighbors, as they would
any other family.
It is not die purpose of our organization to keep Negro or other
minority families out of Park
Hill; nor are we promoting their
movement into the area. We are
merely seeking to apply the laws
of God and man to die human
relations problems that exist
in this community.
4. We will actively support
laws and practices intended to
make any housing in the city and
state available for purchase by
any buyer into the Park Hill
community.
5. We will seek to follow the
Judeo - Christian conscience in
our community in the treatment
of any new neighbors, and will
invite them to attend and join
in the church of their choice in
our community.
6. We will frequently consult
with leaders of other races concerning problems of the community and will invite them to participate in the work of our committee.
Following is the full text of
the Park Hill Action Committee's
statement on human relations:
We recognize as one of the
tenets of our common faith, the
equality of all men before God,
irrespective of race, creed or
color. We support the American
constitutional principle that all
people are equal before the law.
We believe that race, creed or
color should have no effect on
the right of any person to reside among us.
Therefore, we adopt these
principles as a guide to action
in the field of human relations:
1. The basic program of the
Park Hill Action Committee is
one of civic action and education
for all the residents of Park
Hill.
2. We will seek to maintain
Park Hill as a desirable and
stable community predominantly
composed of single family residences, without discrimination
as to race, creed or color.
3. We will encourage white
families both to avoid panic selling, if members of a racial
minority group move into their
Enhance Your Property
Here's Your Chance
To Get R-0 Zoning
The Park Hill Action Committee plans to rezone most of the
area between 25th to 32nd Avenue, from Colorado Blvd. to Kearney and Magnolia, from R-l to R-0 Zoning. This is the highest
residential zoning available, and real estate men state that the
higher zoning classification enhances and protects property values.
It is not retro-active -- that is, if you live in the area and are
conducting a home business now, you'll be able to continue doing
this when R-0 zoning becomes effective.
If you want to help in the rezoning, tear out this coupon and
..Vail to Cv.-rs*4 I> s'^-l, ^T-^Oh;>irTr<*r>, .5r 2801 Grape. Denver 7.
Five Hundred Dollars is needed in order to accomplish the
rezoning. The Park Hill Action Committee has offered to donate
the first $100 for die project. The additional $400 will have to
come -from the residents of the area. A $1 donation from each
family signing the petition would adequately furnish the needed
amount.
The names of all contributors will be published at a later date.
Those persons wishing to may contribute directly to die block-
worker who brings around the petitions. Blockworkers will have
receipts. We are sorry that it is not possible to mail receipts
to those sending money in.
Mr. Gerald H. Kopel, 2801 Grape
I wish to volunteer as a block worker in getting
signatures on petitions for rezoning more of
Park Hill from R-l to R-0.
□ I enclose a contribution to the PHAC Zoning
Committee to be used for costs of rezoning
more of Park Hill from R-l to R-0.
