In the Field, Blockhouse No. 6, Sampaloe, near
Manila, P.I. Feb. 11th 1899
Dear Mother & Sister
I am using the stocks of my gun for a writing desk
so you must excuse poor writing. I hope you will be
able to read it.
The events of the past week are come pretty near
being the most exciting I was ever took part in.
I will try and give you a short account.
As I wrote you, I was detailed on Special duty
at Headquarters and therefore have not been doing
on
outpost work with the company except one night^ which
I asked permission to go out and about which I wrote
you. Therefore on last Saturday evening when the
fight commenced, I was in quarters with about a
dozen other men. I was standing near the open side
at the back of our quarters & which is over a stream that
runs by when I fancied I heard a dozen or so shots
fired in the direction of our outposts. I told one of our
the men about it but he did not seem to be much
interested, thinking it was purely imaginary on my part
