Dear Mother & Sister
         Your letter dated I believe Dec. 4th 
reached me a couple of days ago and I
was very glad to hear from you.  It seems
to take a very long time for letters to get
here from the States, but I understand
that another mail boat will reach here 
in a few days and perhaps it will
have letters dated considerable later than
the one I got on the last boat.
     Things here are about the same as
when I wrote last.  There is not much
excitement and it is getting quite mono=
tonous.  My health is good now, so I 
have nothing to complain of in that regard.
     There is talk that we are soon to be 
relieved by regulars and sent back to Colorado
~ probably in 60 days or so.  The boys, for the
most part seem quite anxious to get back
and are afflicted with homesickness a good
deal I guess.  If I think I see a chance

	out
away back here, so far from home, that
news & letters from home cheers one a great
deal, so write as often as possible and
if you see some of my friends there tell
them to write too.
     I haven’t got much spare cash now, or I
could try and send some relics home, to 
add to that collection which you say you
have.  I hope I will be able to send 
something interesting after a while. If 
I be live & keep good health I may
decide to stay here awhile and then I
probably would have an opportunity to get
together a collection of curiosities.
     I got the clippings which you sent in the 
letter.  That must have been quite a fire they 
had at the Shafford Planing Mill.
     I hope you both keep well during the cold
season in Rockford.  It must be quite chilly
there now.  Give my regards to Al Anderson & his
family if you see them also to A any of my
friends that you happen to see.
