C.H.U.N. Board Meeting Minutes - November 21 £ December 12, 1974
President Michae Henry called the meeting to order at 7:30 pm pn November
21, 1974 at the Botanic Gardens. Patty Jackson reported $415.62 in the
Treasury.
Mary Snyder reported that the boundary report of the Education Committee
had been well received by the school administration,. However, the Committee's concern that federal Title I funding for disadvantaged students
should follow the students into the new schools where they are being bused
has not yet met with any action from the administration.
Cathy Donohue reported that the Transportation and Traffic Design Committee
continues to monitor plans of the Regional Transportation District for
buses, PRT lines and stations, etc., in our area.
Bill Pace reported on various activities of the Neighborhood Organizing
Committee; Michael Henry briefly spoke on the CHUN People's Fair Committee;
and Rhonda Knop gave a short resume on the Home Financing Committee.
Jim James and Michael Henry reported on the continuing struggle of the
CHUN Land Use and Zoning Committee to amend the city zoning ordinances to
prohibit parking lots in R-3 zones. Bill James, Cathy Donohue, Carolyn
and Zwi Reznik and Paul Huffman volunteered to assist in persuading City
Council.
Several guests were introduced, including Dugan Middleton (neighborhood
planner with the Denver Planning Office), Sally Brown (City Council candidate) , Judy Waterton and Susan Collins (students at University of Colorado
School of Nursing who are studying CHUN for a course), Paul Huffman (of
the Capitol Hill Community Design Center at 430 East 11th Avenue) and
Linda Ross (organizer of a roommate-referral enterprise).
Next item onthe agenda was election of new board members to replace
Virginia Rockwell and Colleen Burke, who recently resigned. Jim James
suggested that we do not replace the members until the spring election
for all board members. Michael Henry suggested that John Hand and former
state representative Carol Tempest would make very interested and excellent
board members. Jim James moved that John Hand and Carol Tempest be elected
to the board, which was passed unanimously.
Rhonda Knop introduced Robert Wells, who is interested in publishing a
directory of services and activities in Capitol Hill. He has published
similar booklets or magazines in Boulder, and he distributed samples of
these for inspection*. All members of the Board seemed to agree that such
a directory would be very valuable for the neighborhood, but there was
disagreement as to whether CHUN should play any role in endorsing the
activities of a profit-making activity. Bill James moved that we go on
record as endorsing the concept of such a directory to be distributed
free in the community (with revenue from advertising). After discussion,
eleven members voted for the motion, three against. Motion carried.
Bernie Jones continued his report of last month on the Capitol Hill
Coordinating Committee mountain retreat - which was reported in full in
the last Urban Dweller (CHUN Newsletter). Bernie moved that CHUN should
encourage long-range planning among the various private groups and agencies,
and should co-sponsor a retreat twice a year for that purpose. Motion
passed unanimously. Bernie then moved that CHUN sponsor a forum sometime
before the May 20 election for City Council Candidates. Motion passed
unanimously. Cathy Donohue volunteered to help with the forum.
Dugan Middleton reported on the street lights and other activities of
the Planning Office.
Patty Jackson moved that annual dues be raised from $2.00 to $3.00.
Motion passed unanimously.
With that inflationary move, the meeting was adjourned.
