CHUN Narrows Focus By Choosing
Six Priorities For Upcoming Year
At last month's general membership meeting, in a display of participatory democracy
that rivaled any New England town meeting, CHUN selected six priorities for the forthcoming year.
The six are:
. Anti-crime efforts, including street lighting;
. assisting with small business economic development;
. attending to issues of the chronically mentally disabled and working with the Capitol Hill Action and Recreation Group (CHARG);
. scrutinizing and curtailing liquor and cabaret licenses;
. promoting responsible apartment owner and renter relationships,
which includes preventing rent gouging, preserving rental units
and promoting responsible tenant selection; and
. fund raising to help CHUN to retain and build its staff and
facilities-
President Marcia Hughes emphasized that the priorities are not intended to exclude
other efforts but will help focus CHUN's energies and resources.
"We will be building strategies to address the concerns that were chosen as
priorities at the meeting. We need our membership and anyone who cares about these
issues to help."
"It's very exciting. There are all sorts of opportunities to be creative and constructive and make Capitol Hill a better place to live."
Anyone who wants to be a neighbor helping neighbors should contact the CHUN office
at 388-2716.
Public Response Halts
Street Light Reduction
The City has agreed to suspend, for
now, its reduction of street lighting
in Capitol Hill. CHUN members have to
share some of the credit for influencing
the City's decision. Citizens speaking
out were heard.
The man responsible for the reduction
program, James Brown, Director of Traffic
Engineering (575-5781), stated the quality of the light is good, even if it is
not as intense. He maintained that
"there was no change, just a reduction
in the level of light." Many Capitol
Hill residents took a dim view of this
distinction without a difference, and
voiced their disillusionment.
