ASHLAND CLUB.
The Ashland Club held its last
meeting for the year last Thursday afiernoon, Pres. Johnson presiding. His address to the members of the club was particularly
noticeable in advancing new ideas,
in contrast with the usual set phrases. The music was rendered by
Misses Rosa Buckingham and
Emily Ecker. The recitationa by
Ray Smithee and Beatrice Simpson were up to the standard. The
debate was on the subject, " Resolved, That public amusements
and parks shauld be closed on
Sunday," and was represented by
George McGregor on the affirmative and Bettie Blake on the negative. Miss McClure, Mamie Hunt
and Ida Dickenson acted as judges,
awarding the victory to the affirmative. Minute speeches were a feature of the program that were quite
amusing, Maud Varney had for
her subject "Gum," Nellie Wilson,
"Dust," George Aicher, "Eggs,"
Walter King, "Elections," and
Frank Smith, "Guns." The remarks were necessarily short and
to the point. Miss Fannie Crews
made an excellent critic's report.
The Constitution committee of
the Ashland Club is at work on
the new constitution and expect to
report next week.
As the next public meeting,
which comes during May, is the
last one for the school year, we
suggest to the committee that a
special effort be made to make it
more than ordinarily interesting.
The several features of school life
can be represented to good effect.
One thing we wish to recommend
is that a squad drill be given by
the cadets. They have not been
represented in any manner this
year, and feel quite ready to add a
feature to the program.
Sergt. William Smedley has taken several excellent photographs
ot the officers of the cadets. The
entire company is to be taken in
platoon front with colors soon by
the enterprising sergeant.
Charlie Stephens of the Tenth
grade has left school.
The Exponent has been named
the official military kicker of the
state of Colorado.
